Atari’s First Commercial

This is Atari’s first and highly inaudible commercial for Pong.

Why did they pick a cowboy? Why does this cowboy have a buff man servant? Unless I missed something, Atari’s first target demographic were 70 year old wives of cowboys that needed something to do other than listen to their cowboy husband (who probably knew very little about electricity let alone electric games) get ass-slammed by Chefan, the hot-and-horny man servant.

I wonder what products target that “wife of gay cowboy” demographic now?

Other news:
So, it’s look like Retro Gaming Month is going to become Retro Gaming Quarter. Heh, well I hope not, but life/school are showing no mercy right now. I’m fighting a staph infection and several burns (a simple breakfast nearly turned into a comic massacre). I had a project due last night which I wasn’t able to finish in time, so I’ll be working on that this weekend, then I’ll be catching up on my thesis work.

I wish I could say you guys come first, but if I flunk outta school, then I’ll quickly become homeless. And last I heard, homeless people don’t have sweet ass internet connections.

Or showers.

Wish me luck and thanks for sticking with me!

Tonight’s Show

Hey everyone,

Big thanks to everyone that came out to the show. I just got back. Holy shit, the new comics were great, the new material was great, and seeing so many people being excited about comedy in a music focused town was the best.

My apologies to you all for not having any new vids this week. Tomorrow I wake up and (hopefully) finish my second project of the week before I get a late grade.

Stay Tuned! Life will eventually calm down and I’ll get back to throwing up one or two vids a week.

Thanks again!

Retro Commerical: Atari 2600

Wow, both graphics and marketing quality have come a long way. Pete Rose is probably the last person in the world I think of when I play video games today.

Video Update/Apology:

So ya, I’ve fallen WAY behind. My school/thesis has been hungry-hungry-hippoing all my time. Sadly this week is going to be even busier. I wish I could say I’ll have my reviews out this week, but every evening this week will either consist of working on school project, proctoring an exam, or running a comedy show.

Which reminds come me COME TO THE JAZZ HAUS IN LAWRENCE THIS THURSDAY (FEB 19) NIGHT AND SEE ME!

One cool thing is that my projects involve openGL and I’m making a retro themed one that I’ll post here when I’m done.

Thank you very much for your patience!

Retro History: Death of the Arcades X*(

“All things that have a beginning, have an end.”

Another vid from the good people at “Play Value“. This one covers the sad tale of the end of the Arcade Era.

VIDEO UPDATE:
So, the King of Kong review is still in the editing phase. I’ve decided to split it up into a two or three part series. Sorry it’s taking so long, but believe me, it’ll be worth it! Once I get the KoK review done, then the videos will start to poor out.

Vidoes to expect:
-KoK review series
-Chasing Ghost Review
-KoK: Facts and Myths

Top 5 Most Memorable Retro Games

Retro Gaming Month Continues!

And here are my most memorable retro games. Remember, I’m not saying these are the best. Oh lord, some of these are just down right shit piles, but they the games that stick out in my memory before I really understood what a video game was.

5. Empire Strikes Back

Okay okay, this game sucks. I know. But man oh man, do I remember it sucking. The hours I spent as an idiot child, with eyes full of tears, nose full of mucus, and lungs filled with the whaling of ignorance crying for “more!” will haunt my nightmares forever. To a kid, it was like a shot in the rocks to take a movie as beloved as Empire and turn it into a game (games of course also being loved) and then give the most bland, repetitive, unsatisfying gaming experience of my youth. Oh well, at least this asshole wasn’t in it.

4. Galaga

Ship!? Lazers!?! BUG SHIPS!?!
Omg, I had no idea what to make of this game, but as a kid, it was total nerd-boner eye candy. Space? Love it. Space Ships? Love those too! Enemies that look like the Insecticons? Holy shit, Mom, give me the god damn quarter!
And I’m not alone in this regard. This is one of those classic that became a piece of classic 80’s culture.

3. Q-Bert

Not a common favorite, but to me this was very memorable.  Mainly because it was all about a cursing testicle that seems to have gotten lost in the third dimension.  I was hella young when I first play this, so having my parents explain to me what he was doing when he died or got hit by the snake was, as sad as it is to say, how I learned about curse words.  I wonder what he was really saying…

2. Donkey Kong

I actually didn’t play this one very much because once Super Mario Bros. came out, I didn’t see much point.  But, none the less, I’ll never forget seeing Mario and Donkey Kong, two characters that went on to be the biggest names in gaming, in their most primitive form.  Also, this is the first platformer I ever played.

1. PacMan

Holy Shit, this fucking game was EVERYWHERE.  It didn’t matter where I went, a PacMan cabinet was there.  I could go for pizza, to the skate rink, baseball games, bowling alleys, and laundry mats all had PacMan at the ready.  The Atari version looked like shit, but the arcade version was really slick looking.  The dark backgrounds, bright characters, and goal of eating all the dots that humans recognize precognitively, made PacMan the most memorable retro game of my childhood.

Universal Studios VS Nintendo: The Lost Story

This is a video from the Play Value series. This video starts with Colecovision and it’s history, but at 5:15 there is a very cool and sparsely known story about Universal Studios filing a law suite against Nintendo for copyright infringement on “Kong Kong” with their game “Donkey Kong”. Universal turned out to be total fucking tards, because just seven years earlier Universal filed a suite that proved that “King Kong” was so old it was public domain so that they could film a remake of it.

Currently I’m working on the “King of Kong” review, so look for that soon. It’ll be my first movie review, and it’s a movie I love so I really want to nail this one.

Retro Gaming Month: Preview

All February long I’ll be taking a look at two great documentaries: “The King of Kong: A Fist Full of Quarters” and “Chasing Ghosts: Beyond the Arcade“. These films have a lot of the same characters and cover some of the same topics, but have two very different slants to them. If you haven’t seen them check them out! It’ll make this month a lot more fun for both of us.
